Cannibal Corpse: Evisceration plagueCannibal Corpse: Evisceration plague

02/02/09  ||  Euthanatos

Of all the things that are sweet and (un)holy, nothing gives me orgasms like Cannibal Corpse. Call me anachronistic, call me a fanboy, I don’t care. Fact of the matter is that there is not one Cannibal Corpse release that I don’t enjoy. And most of them, I simply worship.

But all nut swinging aside, very few will deny the seminal importance of the band in the death metal genre. Whether for their pioneering brand of brutality or their bold choices for controversial covers, Cannibal Corpse have been making music history since the 1990’s, and it’s no fluke that even people who know nothing of metal have at least heard of the name. That comes with integrity, grit, and yes, Ace Ventura.

Naturally, this is not the same sound as portrayed in gore classics like the “Eaten Back to Life” debut, “Butchered at Birth” and “Tomb of the Mutilated”. The band has evolved monstrously since then, having unstable, yet still captivating moments, but also reaching fantastic heights.

And lately, Cannibal Corpse have been nothing short of spectacular, with the insane trifecta of the awesome “The Wretched Spawn”, the ripping “Kill” and now “Evisceration Plague”. This latest album is a crowning achievement, a great below to the zombie masses that death metal is alive and very, very well.

While I was extremely pleased with “Kill”, a really fun album, “Evisceration Plague” is closer to “The Wretched Spawn” is terms of sheer brutality, an uncompromising buttfuck of an album.

A lot of the appeal of this record for me comes from Georgy boy Corpsegrinder’s vocals; while still insanely aggressive, Fischer now manages to make himself understood, and not just the sound of a gutter spewing from his vocal chords. Listen to the multi-layered despair in “Evidence in the Furnace” just to get an idea. But the cake truly goes to Pat O’Brien and Rob Barrett for the stellar guitar work. There are some crazy melodies among the chaos, I’ve truly never heard guitar work this good on a Cannibal Corpse album. I’m a giddy little schoolboy with a hard-on in his pants.

Seriously, just listen to the romping “Priests of Sodom” and the epic “Beheading And Burning”; if you’re not blown away, you simply don’t care for this band or much of death metal. I’m telling you right now, because I’m your friend, get this album and headbang like a motherfucker.

The cover: Absolutely fucking awesome. Though there’s less gore than I’m used to (and hope for), but Vincent Locke is always a killer.

9 corpses being cannibalized out of 10.
